Background of the Study

Infection control is a critical component of pediatric healthcare, particularly in settings with high rates of hospital-acquired infections (HAIs). Pediatric nurses are at the forefront of implementing infection prevention and control (IPC) measures, ensuring that protocols are followed to reduce the spread of infectious diseases in healthcare settings (Nwigwe et al., 2023). In Kebbi State, healthcare facilities face significant challenges in maintaining standard infection control practices due to resource constraints, inadequate training, and lack of consistent supervision (Adeleke et al., 2023).

This review will examine the compliance of pediatric nurses with infection control guidelines in Kebbi State, focusing on the key practices of hand hygiene, sterilization of medical equipment, and the prevention of nosocomial infections in pediatric wards. Understanding the barriers to compliance and the gaps in knowledge or resources will provide insights into strategies for improving infection control in the state.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the establishment of infection control protocols in many healthcare facilities, compliance among healthcare workers, including pediatric nurses, remains inconsistent. In Kebbi State, the challenges of proper training, the availability of materials, and the monitoring of infection control practices contribute to the high rates of healthcare-associated infections. This review aims to assess how well pediatric nurses comply with infection control guidelines and to identify areas for improvement.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the level of compliance of pediatric nurses with standard infection control guidelines in Kebbi State.
  2. To identify the barriers affecting the adherence of pediatric nurses to infection control protocols.
  3. To recommend strategies for improving infection control compliance among pediatric nurses in Kebbi State.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of compliance with infection control guidelines among pediatric nurses in Kebbi State?
  2. What factors contribute to non-compliance with infection control guidelines in pediatric care settings in Kebbi State?
  3. What strategies can be implemented to improve infection control practices among pediatric nurses in Kebbi State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Pediatric nurses in Kebbi State exhibit low levels of compliance with standard infection control guidelines due to resource constraints.
  2. Barriers such as inadequate training, lack of resources, and insufficient supervision hinder pediatric nurses' adherence to infection control protocols.
  3. Implementing regular training programs and providing necessary resources will improve compliance with infection control guidelines among pediatric nurses in Kebbi State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This review will focus on pediatric nurses working in public and private healthcare settings in Kebbi State, examining their knowledge and compliance with infection control protocols. Limitations include the potential for bias in self-reported data and the challenge of obtaining comprehensive data from all healthcare facilities in the state.

Definitions of Terms

  • Nosocomial Infections: Infections acquired in a hospital or healthcare facility, often due to lapses in infection control practices.
  • Pediatric Nursing: The branch of nursing focused on providing care to children, including infection prevention and control.
